Freckles (Ephelides)
A heredity blemish, freckles are one of the most common pigmentation forms. Whilst they are accepted and thought of as an attractive feature on most, many seek to have them removed.
Melasma
The sides of the face are affected with this condition, appearing as medium to dark brown patches. Woman are more commonly affected by this condition, particularly those on birth control pills and areas which it appears include the upper lip, forehead, cheeks and bridge of nose. Only a small proportion of men are affected by this condition and sun exposure or heat exacerbate the condition.
Sun Damage (Solar Lentigines)
Also known as liver spots, these forms of pigmentation are age spots which occur as a consequence of sun exposure. While they are most commonly found on the face and hands, any exposed area can be affected.

This type of pigmentation results from an overproduction of melanin and usually appears on the face and abdomen. Just like melasma, this condition worsens after sun exposure.
Lichen Simplex Chronicus
Severe itching and dark patches characterise this form of pigmentation. If untreated, this condition can lead to infection and permanent scarring if unresolved.
