What is a Chemical Peel?
This non-invasive skin procedure works through the application of a carefully formulated chemical solution to the skin. This is designed to gently remove the damaged skin cells, stimulating cell turnover. As a result of this, skin renewal can occur to improve the appearance of the skin. This can be effective in the treatment of several kinds of skin types and concerns.
- Fine lines and early signs of ageing
- Uneven skin tone and rough texture
- Acne and acne scarring
- Pigmentation, sun spots, and melasma
- Enlarged pores and congestion
Know the Varying Chemical Peel Depths
When it comes to chemical peels, there are many kinds available. However, the difference between these depends solely on your unique skin type. The treatment chosen varies by the skin tolerance to treatment, type of skin (e.g dry, oily etc), and goals.
- Mild peels: This chemical solution targets the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) for renewal. The mechanism provides a gentle exfoliating treatment, dissolving the bonds tying the dead skin cells together.
- Medium-depth peels: Moderate skin penetration into the epidermis, and also the top of the dermis (skin’s middle layer). It operates deeper into the skin, targeting skin conditions such as moderate scarring, wrinkles, and an uneven tone.
- Deep peels: This is a powerful medical-grade peel, and it must be administered by a qualified medical provider. The treatment penetrates into the mid-dermis layer of the skin for rejuvenation.
*At Results Laser Clinic, our qualified skin specialists will first assess your skin to determine the appropriate treatment. As outlined, the chemical peels are strictly at a mild depth and may border on medium.
Get to Know: The RLC Chemical Peel Range
At Results Laser Clinic, we offer many kinds of chemical treatments to cater to unique skin types and goals. These solutions vary based on the chemical solutions used, acids, the depth of the peel, to the skin concerns targeted. We know that not every skin type is the same, and work towards accommodating these.
Acne Beta Peel
This treatment is designed to target acne-causing bacteria and excess oil production. This then provides deep skin decongestion. By working potently to clarify the skin, it brings blemishes under control. It both targets current breakouts, and prevents future ones from occurring.
White Peel
Brighten the skin from conditions such as hyperpigmentation, sun damage and dull or uneven skin. The white peel’s mechanisms penetrate the epidermis, targeting cells rich in melanin to promote skin renewal. This then operates to reduce the look of pigmentation on the skin’s surface.
Photo Age Peel
Ageing or prematurely ageing skin creates moderate fine lines, wrinkles or sagging skin. The photo age peel stimulates the skin’s anti-ageing proteins, including collagen and elastin. At the same time, it works to remove dead skin cells and impurities causing the appearance of excess pigment.
Mandelic Peel
Ideal for deeper complexions, this peel utilises the potent alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), Mandelic Acid. It penetrates deep into the layers of the skin. Through gentle exfoliation it promotes the skin’s cellular renewal process. As a result, it can improve the look of blemishes, acne, ageing and pigmentation.
Our Chemical Peel Process in Melbourne: Here's What to Expect
Whether you’ve had a chemical peel before, or it’s your first time, considering a professional treatment can seem daunting. At Results Laser Clinic, we are committed to providing complete transparency. Helping you to become informed every step of the way.
- Treatment Preparation: Before the treatment begins, the skin must be thoroughly cleansed. Your face will be cleansed of skin products, makeup residue and other impurities. This is followed by the application of a pre-peel to lower the skin’s pH level. Through this it allows for better treatment penetration into the skin.
- Chemical Peel Application: Once the skin has been properly prepared, the chemical peel is carefully administered. The duration of which the chemical peel treatment is left on does vary. This depends on the depth of the chemical peel, as well as the type of solution being applied.
- Calming Inflammation: To mediate the chemical solution and boost effectiveness, this step is key. A neutralising solution will be carefully applied to the skin. This improves the skin’s pH level to prevent a chemical reaction. LED light therapy is also applied as it can further calm the skin, alongside improving treatment effectiveness.
*Please note that the above is a general overview of what to expect from the treatment. Each service is tailored to your skin type and goals. The outcome of a chemical peel is never guaranteed.
How Do I Know if a Chemical Peel is Right for Me?
It can be challenging to know whether a chemical peel may be appropriate for you. At Results Laser Clinic, our team will provide a skin consultation to evaluate your treatment eligibility. As a general rule of thumb, there’s a few factors that can provide a baseline of this.
- When you don’t have a sensitive skin condition, e.g eczema
- If your treatment expectations are realistic within its confines
- If you haven’t taken Accutane in the past 12 months
- When you have acne-prone skin
- If you don’t have active wounds or infections
- You have signs of skin ageing e.g moderate wrinkles
- If you have hyperpigmentation e.g freckles
*Please note that the above is a general overview of treatment eligibility. If you’re unsure, please consult with your general practitioner, or our team at Results Laser Clinic for further information.
What are the Risks Associated with a Mild Chemical Peel?
While the treatment depth is relatively superficial, there are some risks to be made aware of. These side effects are short-lasting, not exceeding seven days in duration. However, the risks experienced vary based on factors including treatment type and depth, as well as individual skin type.
- Inflamed skin appearing as red or pink
- Excessive dry skin and tightness to the touch
- Heightened sensitivity to external factors, including UV rays
- Dandruff-like flaking on the lower half of the face

Pre-Peel and Post-Peel Skincare: Your Treatment Guide
Like any other professional skin treatment, the right preparation and maintenance can be equally as important. Skin preparation helps allow for the skin to absorb the chemical treatment more evenly. On the other hand, the right after care helps protect your already compromised skin barrier. This is essential as it protects your skin from pollutants, dirt, dust, and other impurities.
| Timeline | 24 hours prior | Five days prior | Two weeks prior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skin Preparation | Avoid shaving the face, or wherever the treatment area may be. | Don’t use any harsh skincare products during this period, these are formulations that contain active ingredients. This includes but isn’t limited to AHAs, BHAs, retinoids and other types of formulas. Also, don’t exfoliate the skin to prevent irritation, regardless of whether it’s chemical or mechanical. | Avoid partaking in any forms of more “permanent” hair removal. This includes electrolysis, waxing, depilatory creams, tweezing, threading and laser hair removal. Also, stay away from direct sun exposure (sun-tanning) or fake-tanning. Previous chemical peels, injectables, or other cosmetic treatments must be done two weeks minimum prior. |
| Timeline | 24-48 hours post-treatment | Three to five days post-treatment | One week post-treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skin Maintenance | Your skin will feel raw, inflamed and exposed. To alleviate these temporary symptoms, simplify your existing skincare routine. Use a gently-formulated cleanser, sunscreen (ideally SPF 50+) and a nourishing cream for barrier support. | This period has skin peeling on the face, especially around the nose and mouth. Continue with your gentle skincare routine and try to avoid picking at or touching the skin. This supports and strengthens the skin’s protective barrier. | If your skin is no longer flaking or appears as inflamed, you can reintroduce skincare. By following this timeline, it allows for your skin’s barrier to heal properly in this recovery period. Use actives and exfoliating products as normal. |

The majority of people are suitable for Chemical Peels. Treatments are available for a variety of skin types. A complimentary consultation is recommended to discuss your skin and ensure the right peel or another treatment is recommended.
The peels do not require take-home products to prepare the skin. Avoid sun exposure for two weeks before treatment, as well as AHA, BHA and Vitamin A products.
Chemical Peels are virtually pain-free. You may feel a hot sensation when the peel is applied, and your therapist will check how it feels. The peel is removed and cooled once it has penetrated the skin’s layers.
Unlike peels of the past, very minimal downtime is required. Skin may appear slightly red and flaky.
Only a few side effects are associated with Chemical Peel treatments. Redness, swelling and irritation normally subside within a few hours and there is no downtime. Therapists will guide you on post-peel skin care.
Because ultraviolet light can cause further skin damage, use sun protection to protect new skin during and after Chemical Peel treatments. A broad-spectrum SPF 50, such as Active Protect sunscreen, is recommended.
Results vary, but you will see a definite change in your skin once you complete the recommended treatment plan.
