What are Broken Capillaries?
Otherwise known as telangiectasia, broken capillaries are small and permanently dilated blood vessels on the skin. These often present as thin red, or purple thread like lines. The parts of the face and body these are most commonly found in, include the nose, cheeks, chin and chest, and in some cases the legs. This often presents itself as persistent red patches, or a bruise on the skin’s surface.
What are the Causes Behind Broken Capillaries?
There are a wide range of potential reasons for broken capillaries, from environmental, lifestyle to hereditary factors. These include excessive sun exposure, cold wind, facial injury, extreme weather temperatures and the skin’s natural ageing process.
How To: Treat Broken Capillaries on the Skin
At Results Laser Clinic, there are a wide range of treatment options available to potentially target broken capillaries. Both of which emit light in order to break them down in the body, which would then be dispersed within the lymphatic system. The treatment technology applied is non-invasive, which could provide a more comfortable treatment experience.
Intense Pulsed Light Treatment (IPL)
The IPL treatment is applied through the Palomar Starlux Intense Pulsed Light. It’s generally considered to be more suitable in the treatment of broader areas of facial flushing. The treatment works through emitting several wavelengths of light onto the skin. This is then absorbed by damaged pigments within blood vessels, which could reduce their appearance.
Nd:Yag Laser Treatment
During the treatment, our team applies Candela’s Nd:Yag 1064nm laser. This process works through emitting laser energy to the target vessel’s haemoglobin. The heat works to collapse the broken capillary, which is later drained away by the body’s lymphatic drainage system. This is otherwise known as a process called coagulation.

How Do I Know If I’m Suitable for a Vascular Reduction Treatment?
To determine your eligibility, our team will provide a skin consultation as a part of our treatment process. During this stage, you may raise any questions or concerns which can help our team to tailor the right plan for your skin.

- Broken capillaries across the nose, cheeks or chin
- Spider veins on the face, chest or legs
- Persistent facial flushing or rosacea-related redness
- Cherry angiomas and isolated vascular lesions
- You are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have not had strong sun exposure as of recently
- You are not currently taking photosensitising medications

This will gradually reduce over the next 24–36 hours. In some cases, it may take 72 hours.
- Using AHA, BHA or Vitamin A products.
- Waxing the area.
- Swimming pools and spas with chemicals or chlorine.
- Activities that cause excessive perspiration.
- Drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated.
- Use a recovery gel to cool and nourish the skin; ask about RESULTS ACTIVE RECOVERY GEL.
- Continue to apply RESULTS ACTIVE PROTECT SPF 50+ daily.
This is similar to sunburn and will gradually reduce over the next 24–36 hours. If you experience prolonged redness, swelling, infection or any other issue with the treated skin, contact your clinic. In some cases, you may be advised to contact your GP.

The treatment can be described as a brief pinch, or tingle on the skin. For laser treatments, the short burst of heat is often quickly followed by a cooling system. Which can then make it a more pain-free and comfortable process.
Post-treatment, it’s likely that you may experience mild redness, or swollen skin. However, all of these side effects are likely to subside within a few days. Within two to four weeks of your previous treatment, we’ll advise an additional treatment. This allows us to assess the condition of your skin, providing ongoing treatments and maintenance advice.
Capillary treatments, like other treatments in-clinic, require consistent sessions in order to have promising effects on the skin. Our cosmetic nurses will advise you on the ideal frequency for the treatment, depending on your skin’s needs. As a general rule of thumb, four to six treatments may be undergone to facilitate a promising outcome.
You may see results as soon as after one session, and at maximum three sessions. However, our team will recommend a tailored and ongoing treatment plan to address your skin’s unique demands. We’ll work with your skin to potentially meet your desired skin goals.
