How stress can affect your skin. Signs and symptoms.
One thing that we all experience in our lifetime is stress. And oh boy! Has it been a stressful few months! If only we could rid it from our lives and how it affects us. Stress is a reaction we experience when we are put under strain, duress or are required to make a tough decision. Everyone can experience different levels of stress and react differently. Stress not only affects our emotional health but also the health of our skin. We can take back some control by understanding what stress does to our skin and what we can do to manage the symptoms.
Why can stress be harmful to our skin?
When stressed our body’s response can play out in many ways. We experience sudden breakouts, rashes, dry skin, hives and slow skin healing. It is really important to pay attention to the changes in your skin during times of stress or change. The sooner we notice the signs the quicker we are able to help treat or ease symptoms. Lets take a look at how stress can affect your skin.
1. Breakouts and Acne
Stress may lead to sudden breakouts. Breakouts can present themselves as pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. They are formed when a build-up of dead skin cells, dirt, oil and acne causing bacteria clog your pores. Leading to inflammation, irritation and unsightly red blemishes. Poor eating habits during a stressful time can also play a role in breakouts reappearing, as our eating schedules and habits change so will our skin. You can help battle congestion from home by following a daily skin routine that focuses on cleansing and decongesting your pores. You can also visit one of our clinics that offer a range of treatments for breakouts including; Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels & Blue LED Light Therapy.
2. Rashes
Rashes can be triggered by allergies, medications, treatments or underlying conditions. Redness of the skin or itchy bumps may also be a result of stress, which can lead to further irritation and skin symptoms. The affected areas can be found anywhere on the body and vary in size. Other types of rashes include hives or welts. Ice packs, cooling gels or creams can help soothe the affected area, calm down the itchiness or redness and provide short term relief. Results we offer our own cooling gel aimed at soothing redness and irritation after a number of our treatments.
3. Dry Skin
Dry skin that could be caused by stress can leave the skin feeling itchy, flaky and irritated. Dry skin is a result of a lack of moisture in the skin. One way to assist dry skin in healing is by applying a deep moisturising cream or ointment. Our Results Active Moist is a daily anti-ageing moisturising cream, rich in antioxidants and packed with peptides that breathes life and energy back into tired skin. At your next visit, you can also ask our therapists about suitable treatments for dry skin that include; Microdermabrasion, Extractions and LED Light Therapy Facials.
How can a skincare routine keep my skin healthy?
We may not be able to control all the factors that lead to unhealthy skin. Some are just out of our control. But great news! We can control what we put on our faces and a consistent skincare routine will help to maintain the health of our skin. By using gentle cleansers, moisturising daily, protecting yourself against the sun, by using SPF 50, and developing a routine that suits your skin needs is key to keeping your skin healthy.
It is also important that you seek professional advice before undertaking any skin treatments or utilising skincare products. At Results, we encourage mental health and wellbeing checks with a GP or specialist to ensure a healthy mind and healthy skin.
